Hello,
I'm Kenneth Cole, Public Safety Instructor at the Ponitz Career Technology Center (PCTC); a joint collaboration between Dayton Public Schools and Sinclair Community College. I teach Fire Fighting and Rescue within the Public Safety Academy located at PCTC. Our program is designed to instruct and prepare young students for careers within the Fire Services. Fire Fighting and Rescue at the PCTC is still in the development stages as are many of the other programs at the Ponitz Center. We hope to eventually certify students that complete our program pathway as professional firefighters and offer them two year scholarships to SCC, with which they may obtain associate degrees in fire science or within emergency medical services. We maintain  close collaboration with the Fire Science Department at Sinclair Community College and are in the process of fine tuning the program to include dual credit for coursework, joint training and continual reevaluation to assure safety and the best training available. At the Ponitz, we are excited about the possibilities for providing students the opportunities to obtain career training and a quality college education at low cost in careers that are in demand. We combine the best of both worlds in that we provide hands on career training, strong academics, and an early entrance to college through our articulated agreements with Sinclair Community College. Our goal is to develop job ready, academically prepared students that meet or exceed the demands of the 21st century global job market. If you feel that you have what it takes to be a success in the fire service and are prepared to meet the challenges that come with with it, then drop by the Ponitz Career Technology Center in Dayton, Ohio and I will help you to plan a roadmap for a rewarding career as a professional firefighter and emergency medical services technician.

What we do- We engage in a variety of activities throughout the year to strengthen and reinforce the quality of instruction that our students receive. Our students enjoy frequent speakers from across the spectrum of public safety careers and participate in field trips to enhance the public safety classroom experience . Above and below, some of our students are preparing to be raised in an aerial platform aboard a ladder truck at the Wright Patterson AFB Fire Department. Another student is practicing with fire turnout gear and wearing a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). Lastly, some of our students come out to the fire stations and ride along with the station personnel on emergency incidents. Experiences such as these lend realism and authenticity to the classroom instruction as well as raise the threshold of awareness as to what the actual career environment is like.
